Marin Bayside Escape

From its stunning 180-degree views of the San Francisco Bay to its classic French Tudor-style details, this hillside residence is truly one of a kind. Built in 1936 and originally designed by architect Henry Higby Gutterson, the Wade Design team welcomed the opportunity to preserve its original character and simultaneously maximize its design potential. Major renovation goals included opening the space to take in the monumental panorama via new windows in nearly every room. Modifications were made to adjoin the living and dining room spaces and highlight the original mahogany wood beam ceiling, akin to the woodwork from an antique boat hull. In addition to transforming every bedroom and bathroom space, a guest house was overhauled, giving ample space for the Client’s family to truly experience this magical getaway.

From the moment I spoke with Ani, and when we met her and Luke in person, it was obvious that we were in good hands. Their vision for the home far exceeded what we thought was possible. Imperfect parts of the house which we were resigned to - as a compromise, given its charm - disappeared through Ani and Luke’s dogged determination. Equally important was their project management and their client-friendly approach. This was a particularly important factor because we do not live in California and could not visit the site regularly.

This home is one of six extensive renovation projects our family has undertaken over the years. Working with Ani and Luke has been by far the easiest and best experience. We highly recommend Wade Design Architects.
